Chapter II Review of Related Literature Marriage Migration Migration is a wide area of study to which a variety of issues arise from. Taylor Francis Online defined migration as the movement of people from one place to another with the intent of settling in the new location, either temporarily or permanently. There are different types of physical migration: intercontinental (between countries), intracontinental (between countries on a given continent), and interregional (within countries) (Taylor Francis Online, 2016). With the new development of technology and the accessibility of travel in everyday life, the migration of people has become easier and more common. Kayod) Migration of different nationalities to foreign countries has led to the formation of interracial marriages. Interracial marriages Interracial marriages became a trend, not only in Asia, but also in Europe and the Americas as well during the time marriage brokers and Mail-Order Brides were numerous and well known. A research by Julia Reinold et al., which was requested by the European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, titled International Marriage Brokers and Mail Order Brides. Analysing the need for regulation, Mail-Order Bride websites differ from traditional dating websites since Mail-Order Bride websites have an element of migration; the bride leaves her home country and later joins the Mail-Order Sponsor in his country. The first sightings of Mail-Order Brides can be found in the early 1600 s in the United States of America after the formation of the British and French colonies. Both countries encouraged people to migrate to the United States of America for the reason that migration could contribute to the development of the colony. It was around the 1700 s and 1800 s that the first International Marriage Brokers was created, assisting European women in moving to countries such as New Zealand, the United States of America, and Australia.
